Living in South Korea for almost one and a half year, I have slowly adapted to the way of living here. I found myself always rushing to cross the streetor catch the train. Everything is fast-paced especially in Seoul. “Ppali! Ppali!” as what Koreans say. However, last August 6 to 10, 2016, I was able to witness and experience a completely different side of Korea. I, along with middle to university students, participated at a summer camp in Gochang.
한국엔 약 일년 반 정도 살았습니다. 이곳의 삶의 방식에도 천천히 적응해 가는 중이었습니다. 항상 전철을 타기 위해 사람들을 헤집고 가는 모습도 볼 수 있게 되었죠. 특히 서울에서는 모든것이 빠르게 흘러갑니다. "빨리! 빨리!" 는 한국인들이 가장 자주 하는 말이기도 하죠. 그런데 전 지난 2016년 8월 6일부터 10일까지 전혀 다른 한국의 모습을 제 두 눈으로 보고 느
낄 수 있었습니다. 중학생부터 대학생까지 다양하게 참여한 고창 여름 캠프에 함께 한 것입니다.
Gochang is a rural area in North Jeolla province. The ride from Seoul took almost 5 hours but it was worth it. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the warm weather and welcome of the villagers.
고창은 전라북도의 시골 지역입니다. 서울에서 약 5시간이 걸리는데 그럼에도 갈 가치는 충분히 있는 곳입니다. 도착한 우리를 반겨 준 것은 따뜻한 날씨와 지역 주민들의 따뜻한 환대였습니다.
While waiting for the participants, the village head invited us at his house. Even though our Korean language skills are limited, we were able to enjoy each other’s company as we ate sweet potatoes and watched the opening of the Olympics.
참가자들을 기다리는 동안, 마을 이장님께서 우리를 집에 초대해 주셨습니다. 비록 저희의 한국어 실력은 미숙했지만, 함께 고구마를 먹고 올림픽 개막식을 보면서 함께 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다.
We once again filled our stomachs, this time, with watermelon, after the participants arrived.
We had a village tour and time to introduce ourselves to each other. After dinner, there was a lot of time to rest. Before going to sleep, everyone gathered to plan and delegate tasks such as preparing meals and washing the dishes for the next days.
우리는 참가자들이 도착 하자 이번에는 수박을 먹으며 배를 채웠습니다.
마을 구경을 하며 서로 자기소개와 인사를 했습니다. 저녁을 먹고 난 후에는 충분한 휴식시간이 주어졌습니다. 잠들기 전에 모두가 모여서 다음 날 식사준비나 설거지 등의 업무를 분담했습니다.
We woke up early the next day to head over to the mud flat for the first activity. Personally, there were a lot of “firsts” for me that day. First, I rode at the back of the pick-up car and enjoyed the fresh air. Second, I was able to do something that I have only seen on television shows, hunting for clams! Of course, an activity at a mud flat wouldn’t be complete without getting dirty with mud!
다음날엔 일찍 일어나서 갯벌활동을 하러 떠났습니다. 개인적으로 그 날 전 제 인생의 수 많은 '첫경험'을 할 수 있었습니다. 경운기의 뒷칸에 타서 시원한 바람을 맞은것, 티비 예능에서나 보던 갯벌에서 조개잡기를 직접 할 수 있었던 것, 그리고 물론 진흙에 뒹굴지 않고는 할 수 없는 갯벌에서 놀기도 했습니다.
We headed back to the pension, ate lunch and had some rest. A soccer game was played between the camp participants and the residents in Gochang. It was definitely an exciting game to watch!
We once again got up early the following day to clean a greenhouse. In the afternoon, we headed to the river to cool down from the hot weather.
숙소로 돌아와서는 점심을 먹고 잠시 휴식을 가졌습니다. 캠프 참가자들과 고창 주민들 사이에서는 축구 경기가 한참이었습니다. 정말 흥미 진진한 경기였습니다.
우리는 다음날에도 일찍 일어나 온실 청소를 도왔습니다. 오후에는 강으로 가서 더위를 식혔습니다.
Everyone gathered that night to write and pick up their secret missions which they should fulfill by the evening of the next day. Everyone spent the whole night once again playing the ‘Mafia game’, a group game where the mission is to discover who the mafia is before he defeats everyone.
그 날 밤에는 모두가 모여서 저녁이 오기 전까지 할 비밀 미션을 직접 쓰고 뽑는 시간을 가졌습니다. 마피아 게임이라는 마피아가 모두를 없애기 전에 마피아를 찾아내야 하는 게임을 하며 밤을 보냈습니다.
The next day, it was time for another day of hunting. We hunted for snails and small fish this time. Later on, we made yanggaeng, a Korean traditional snack made from red bean.
다음날은 또 사냥을 하러 나섰습니다. 이번엔 달팽이나 작은 물고기들을 잡았습니다. 그 후에는 양갱이라는 팥으로 만드는 한국식 간식을 만들었습니다.
As the day is about to end, a lot were trying to complete their special missions. My mission was to pat the head of Yongin twice without him guessing that it was my mission. Other’s missions include shaking hands or showing some cute pose. Because it wasn’t an easy task, we helped each other complete it.
하루가 끝나갈 즈음 많은 친구들이 자기가 받은 미션을 끝내기 위해 노력하고 있었습니다. 제 미션은 용인친구가 제가 미션을 하고 있다는 것을 눈치채지 못 하게 머리를 두 대 때리는 것이었습니다. 다른 사람들의 미션은 악수를 한다거나 귀여운 포즈를 한다거나 하는 것이었는데, 생각보다 쉽지가 않아서 서로서로 도와서 겨우 끝낼 수 있었습니다.
Finally, at night time, the special missions were revealed. Everyone had a good laugh trying to figure out who completed it. Those who were not able to complete it had to showcase their talent. Before ending our last night together, we ended it with a chicken party!
마침내 밤이 오고 특별 미션이 밝혀졌습니다. 누가 미션에 성공했는지 맞춰보며 모두들 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 미션 완수를 못 한 사람은 벌칙으로 장기자랑의 시간을 갖게 했습니다. 마지막 밤을 보내기 전에 우리는 함께 치킨파티를 열었습니다.
The next day, it was finally time to say goodbye. In this camp, while we were away from the busy life in the city, we were able to temporarily forget our worries. I believe that being able to experience rural life also made us appreciate the things that we take for granted such as nature, food, water, and rest. Most of all, even though the time was short, the bond that the group formed will surely last a lifetime. As we go back to our busy lives in the city, I know that whenever we remember our Gochang experience, we will be reminded of our good memories and friendships.
다음날은 드디어 마지막 인사를 전할 시간이 되었습니다. 캠프에 와서, 도시의 바쁜 삶에서 떨어져 지내면서, 우리는 잠시나마 우리의 걱정들을 잊을 수 있었습니다. 시골 생활에서만 경험할 수 있는 시간들이 우리로 하여금 우리가 지금껏 당연하다고 여겨왔던 자연이나 음식, 물, 휴식들에 대해 진심으로 감사할 수 있게끔 만들어주었습니다. 비록 짧은 시간이었지만 끈끈하게 맺어진 우리의 연은 분명히 앞으로도 계속 될 것입니다. 비록 모두가 각자 바쁜 도시에서의 삶으로 돌아가더라도, 우리가 모두 고창에서의 경험을 기헉할 것이고, 좋은 기억과 우정들도 마음속에 간직하고 있을 것이라 믿습니다.
